At the Next Meeting the Exchange Box will not be present, however, the June meeting will find it full of magazines, catalogs, parts and books. "Show and Tell" needs you to bring something from your shack to show those attending, while you tell about it. Remember, you can not win the prizes, contribute your special ideas and catch up on the latest from your ham friends if you do not attend.
The June issue of KARC NEWS will include exact information where to send your check along with choice of entree. The Banquet will be at 7:00 PM on a Friday Night. Come and meet the spouses of members that are brave enough to come. You are automatically entered for the prize drawing. The "Ham of the Year" award will be presented and a very short program. The Banquet Coordinator is Greg, WB6FZH, because he was inattentive during the part of the meeting the banquet was discussed.
Our guest speaker, Alan Lloyd, a retired HECO engineer gave a great talk about "Global Warming". His presentation stressed that based on 18 years of US satellite data, there have always been ups and downs of temperature. There have been previously measured temperatures that are greater than the present time of "Global Warming." Many sources of data were cited, and the Media driven controversy was explored using the science fact & fiction as presented by the various proponent scientists. Based on Mr.Lloyd's presentation, we should atleast be skeptical of the claims of those that are preaching the dire consequences, and the sources of "Global Warming."
Ralph Penner won the main prize, a cabinet with see-through drawers for electro-mechanical storage. Ralph had to leave a few minutes before the drawing, and even won in absentia. This is Ralph's second consecutive win, we will be just sending the prizes directly to Ralph's house in the future. Just Kidding... Come to the meetings meet new friends and maybe win a prize.

AH6OZ, AH7R, WH6BKQ & WB6FZH need your help this year. Everyone is busy this year with one thing or another and some more help would be appreciated. Please contact Walt, AH6OZ or any of the Field Day Committee. You are cordially invited to the KARC Field Day Site to observe, operate, log, visit, picnic, enjoy the park, supervise, cook, eat, and be a part of this, one of Amateur Radio's most exciting days.
If you are interested in helping with "KARC in the Community", by visiting a school, helping someone newly interested in Amateur Radio with those first important questions or helping with an event, please contact your KARC Officers. It is easy and very rewarding to see others begin to find the magic of Amateur Radio.
Other nominations are welcome from the floor at the election meeting, give it some thought, your club needs your input. If there is something you think you would like to work on for KARC, contact your officers. The Club needs to reflect the membership's views.
Hawaii Hams have been connecting to the new MIR PMS (Packet BBS) for about a month now. It seems to be working well. It was donated by Kantronics and is capable of 1200 and 9600 baud operation. It is always in the 1200 mode and may be operated at 9600 during short tests later this year. The new unit has many new features, one important one is that it can be reconfigured and remotely controlled from the ground.
AO-27, the flying repeater, is shutting off just as it reaches Hawaii now making contacts difficult until the power circuit is reset from the ground control station. This is a normal circumstance and is related to the constantly changing orbit, and should be returning to normal in a few days.
At 2700 feet, Weaverville is surrounded by tree-lined mountains. The area is frequented by vacationers that enjoy houseboating and fishing on the Lakes. The waters of Trinity sport Trout, Steelhead and Bass. There are many areas to camp or stay in motels and resorts to enjoy the Shasta Trinity National Forest. There is an amazing sense of History in this Gold Rush Community. There are still modern day gold prospectors in the mountains and dredging their claims on the rivers. There are well maintained highways, 24 HR Medical Facilities, Museums, Churches, Long's Drugstore, Burger King, and many more modern stores and services in this part of the Wild Wild West. The Trinity County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol are headquartered in Weaverville. Situated between Eureka on the Pacific Coast, and Redding in the Sacramento Valley Trinity County is one of California's true outdoor wonderlands. The Trinity County Chamber of Commerce may be reached at (800) 487-4648, Box 517 Weaverville, CA 96093.This is the end of the obvious pitch for tourism.
If I get a chance, I hope to take my Dodge Service Van to one of the nearby camping areas and set-up a portable station. There are lots of trees to hold up wires. I will take a converted tube caddy that contains a TenTec Classic QRP Transceiver, model 505. This is a SSB/CW rig with about 2 watts output. The caddy is full of accessories, so full I can hardly carry it! If I plan right, and have a little luck in timing, the fishing season will be open at the place I select. My Alarm Service Van is fully equipted with the important tools, like fishing rod, cooler, folding chair, folding table, and ofcourse some tools and parts for alarm installation. I understand the 2 meter repeater that gives better coverage than the public safety repeater is off the air. The good news is that it is located on a California Department of Forestry Lookout Station where is sees, hears and transmits to a large part of N. California. The bad news is that it seems to get hit by lightning, as was the case recently. It is solar powered and is a great asset. Snow now covers the road cut to service the site. A visual check by aircraft and photo shows the damage. I will report my activity if the radio contacts are good or the fish big.
I have my HF station still set-up, I will take off the plastic, and vaccuum the spider webs. I have to repair my G5RV and Longwire antennas that were damaged by some heavy equipment that was working on the land in my absence. I hope to fire up some of my classic and military radios too.
