FIELD DAY 2001 by Walt AH6OZ

December QST is out and the result for the 2001 ARRL Field Day are published and posted on the WEB.

FYI, KH6J placed 21st in the event in class 2A. If you include the 2A Battery we were 29th in the event. This is out of 498 entries in this class.

Good work and congratulations to the horde of KARC members that made this all possible.

HF Day 2001

HF Day was held at the Sand Island Park on September 22, 2001. Jim and Bev Yuen organized this event to help new and prospective hams learn about HF operations. Jim Yuen sent the following message:

"Sept 22, 2001 was HF Day dedicated to new and newly upgraded hams to see, touch and operate HF rigs, ask questions and get advice from old timers.
It was a beautiful blue sky day at Sand Island Park as over 40 hams and ham-wannabes came out from 10 AM until almost 5 PM. Seven stations were set up with everything from QRP, SSB, RTTYand CW. First QSO went to Finland followed by Sakhalin Island (Russia), Argentina, Japan, Australia and a bunch of states.
Special thanks to two guys, Kimo KH7U and Walt AH6OZ for efforts over and beyond the call of duty to make the day a success."

Hawaii State Amateur Radio Convention 2001 by Walt AH6OZ

The 1st Hawaii State Amateur Radio Convention of the new Millennium was held on October 13th at Rainbow Bay Community Center near the Arizona Memorial off of the Pearl Harbor Navy Base on Oahu.

The event was an all day affair starting at 0730 with VE testing (three tested and passed) and followed by the arrival of local and neighbor island hams.

The event was similar to last years Ham Fest but with ARRL sponsorship and an extended program that included technical talks all day long.

Two ARRL representatives were scheduled to speak. Unfortunately Jim Maxwell, ARRL Pacific Division Director had to cancel his trip but Ed Hare, W1RFI did manage to get here. Folks appreciated Ed Hare's presence and he seemed to always be talking to someone about something. Ed manned the ARRL table,
gave a presentation during the day on combating RFI and was also the after dinner speaker where he presented a talk on his "Tuna Tin II" QRP rig.

Also presenting talks were Ron Hashiro, AH6RH, on Principals of Emergency Comms Ops in Hawaii, Dean Manley, KH6B, on QRP operations in Hawaii, Kimo Chun, KH7U, on the Kingman Reef DXpedition and Dan Spears, KH6UW, on the Johnston Atoll 2001. In addition Ron, AH6RH put on a Demo of the Yaesu FT-817 QRP rig and there was an ARRL Forum conducted by Ron Phillips, AH6HN and Ed Hare, W1RFI.

Al, AH6PT and Lee, KH6BZF and their wives and families ran a food concession most of the day providing needed drinks, snacks and a lunch of hot dogs, chips and a drink.

Radio Shack was out in force with lots of good at a bargain price and several local hams provided lots of goodies for purchase.

In all there were about 180 paid attendees with dozen others just stopping by for a quick look at what was going on. I would guess that there were about 200+ people there all day till the last prize drawing at 1530. All the talks were well attended with at least 40 people at each session.

The day ended with a buffet dinner a the Queen Kapiolani Hotel which was attended by 53 people.

All in all the event was a big success. Thanks to all those who put in a lot of effort to make this event what it was. Special mention needs to be made to all those that helped in the planning and days activities -- Lee, KH6BZF for publicity; Al, AH6PT and Lee KH6BZF for arranging and selling the lunch; Stu, NH6DR and Dan KH6UW for total control of the talks; Kimo, KH7U for almost absolutely everything that needed to be done without being told; Walt's wife, Margo, KH7EB for handling the door responsibilities; all of our speakers, Ron, AH6RH, Ed, W1RFI (x2), Dean, KH6B, Kimo, KH7U, Dan, KH6UW Ron and Ed for the forum; Jim and Bev Yuen; and many other local hams that offered to help the day of the event and pitched in.

Special thanks to Radio Shack, HRO, Icom, ARRL and a local vendor for door prizes

All in all it was a great day. We took it to the next level and it went well. We'll have to change venue next year as this facility will go commercial with the addition of a dive shop. We also have other changes in the planning stage.

Addendum:

I attended Ed Hare's Radio Frequency Interference talk and Dean Manley's QRP talk. Both speakers were entertaining and
informative. Thanks to both for making the trek to attend our event.

Ed Hare told us about the ARRL's efforts to work with manufacturers of household products to prevent RFI. Sounds like they have been pretty successful, and that the manufacturers are approaching them to test and prevent problems before the products are released to the general public. Ed also discussed how to
work with the local power companies to reduce RFI problems from their equipment.

Dean Manley spoke about his work in QRP. He gave a little history of radio, and demonstrated how a simple spark device could be received by a pocket radio. Dean has made numerous DX contacts with his QRP equipment. At the conclusion of Dean's talk, Frank Nance told us about a radio that he is designing and
his plans to kit it. Sounds like fun!

MINUTES

November 2001 Minutes by Mike Burger, AH7R

The November meeting was held at the usual place, Ho'omauluhia Botanical Park on Windward Oahu at the visitor's center. Meeting was called to order by president Walt at 9:43 p.m.

Among the guests present were Arnie, N6HC, a DXCC field card checker who will be on island for the next nine months, his email is n6hc@aol.com and he is also a CQ awards card checker; and Wayne, NH7IF, newly licensed ham.

Jerry had dropped off minutes of the last meeting which were read and approved after a minor correction. Walt read Al's treasurer's report which shows we have a current balance of $3020.69 after a few expenses and some nice income from the Convention and dues payments. Al also wanted to thank all the
folks who worked to provide food for the Convention.

Walt said he thought it would be more appropriate for us to mail the newsletter on a quarterly basis and to focus on keeping more current information on our web pages.

Sid is taking a break from VE testing and we need a new local contact VE to take over.

Walt said the HF Day event went extremely well with up to 4 stations on the air at one time, and many contacts between 8 am and 3:30 p.m.

There were 183 paid entries for the Ham Convention even and 20-30 others present. 75-80 at any given time. Good participation in the talks and 53 attended the special banquet. Income was $665.70.

Walt suggested that a separate organization should be set up to handle the increasing demands of the growing HamFest/Convention.
Next year a commercial dive shop will occupy our latest site near Pearl Harbor and a new site needs to be found. It was suggested that the new organization get tax exempt status under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).

Jan reported that T-shirt sales went well and we need to sell 4 more shirts for the club to break even.

The next meeting will be in conjuction with the Gordon West visit and be on the Honolulu side at 10:30 to 12:30 in the Ballroom on the second floor of the clubhouse at the Ala Wai Golf Course on December 8, Saturday.

At the January meeting Fred will discuss old time radio antennas, from the days when real radios glowed in the dark, and if you were not careful Hams did too.

Mel had a Small Wonder's Lab PSK31 unit to show off.

The meeting ended with a presentation by Mike, AH7R, on Lanai/Condo antennas for HF operation in confined spaces.

Gordon West Visits Hawaii Hams

On December 8, 2001, Gordon West gave a talk at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse. Gordon talked about troposheric ducting between California and Hawaii, and encouraged us to all get on the air to try this unusual probagation path. Gordon is a great teacher and it was a pleasure to see him in action. Sorry that I lost my notes. He gave out a lot of good information. Anyone else take notes?0

Many thanks to Gordon for stopping by to talk with us. And thanks to Lee Wical, KH6BZF, for arranging the visit, and to John Peters, K1ER/KH6 for picking Gordon up at the airport. It was also great to get together with members of the other ham clubs.

David
