The Koolau Amateur Radio Club Newsletter for January 1999
-ANNOUNCEMENTS-
This combined mailing/printing of DEC/JAN KARC NEWS was done as a
cost saving effort when the DEC issue was delayed and the JAN issue was
only a few days away.-Greg, WB6FZH, Editor/Publisher/President
NEXT MEETING: January 9, 1998 @ 0930 at Ho"omaluhia Park Visitor's Center-
Be there!
Our January Guest Speaker will remain a suprise, as the newsletter went
to press just before the speaker was confirmed.
At the Next Meeting the Exchange Box full of magazines,
catalogs, parts and books will be there. Come and take some
of these magazines and items home or donate some for others. "Show and
Tell" needs you to bring something from your shack to show
those attending, while you tell about it. Remember, you can not win
the prizes, contribute your special ideas and catch up on the latest from
your ham friends if you do not attend.
Walt, AH6OZ, will bring the coffee, and Greg, WB6FZH, the donuts. See you
there!

ANTENNA CONSTRUCTION- The Legendary G5RV- WB6FZH/KH6
This multi-band center-fed antenna that will survive drooping, inverted vee,
classic "inline" and other bent installations. As presented, it will work on
3.5-28 Mhz bands. The antenna is fed with 50 or 72 ohm coaxial line at end
of a 300/450 ohm transformer section of twinlead connected to the two 51 ft.
legs of the antenna. The transformer section may be of several types: The
foam 300 ohm "twinlead" from Radio Shack should be 28'6" long, with the last
6" stripped to go through the center insulator to each of the 51' wires, If
you have the large twinlead with the "windows" it would be 31 feet long with
the same for the last 6", or if you have a tuner with "open wire feeder"
input, an 84'length of 450 ohm feedline will tune directly. When using the
more common 28' length, solder it into a PL-259 type plug, and use a barrell
type adaptor to connect your coaxial cable with a PL-259 on the end. This
will allow easy transportation, installation and construction. Center
and end insulators and two lengths of stranded antenna wire, 52'(last 6" at
each end through the insulator is wrapped back on itself and soldered. It
is a good idea to coat the electrical connectiions with nail polish or
a plastic spray to protect it from the elements. Keep the center of the
antenna as high as you can, you can tye poly or nylon rope to the center for
support. The twinleed transformer should be vertical for best radiation. The
parts can be purchased for less than $35.00. There are assembled and kit
G5RV in the Ham magazine advertisements too. I have used this antenna at
fixed and portable locations for years with great results. The inverted
"V" is my favorite configuration.
