-ANNOUNCEMENTS-
NEXT KARC MEETING- November 8th, at Ho'omaluhia Park Visitor's Center 9:30
am. BE THERE!
At our next meeting a videotape about the VK0IR-Heard Island DXpedition will
be shown. This is one of the most remote places on earth. This is the
official DXpedition Video! The EXCHANGE BOX will be there with used
magazines, books, and catalogs (You do not have to bring something to take
something). The ever-popular SHOW & TELL needs you to bring something from
your shack. THERE IS NO DECEMBER MEETING! The next regular meeting is
Saturday, January 10th, 1998. Remember, you can not win the door prize
if you do not come to the meeting.
2 METER TRANSMITTER HUNT CANCELLED-New Target Date: January '98
Fred, KH6BI and Jerry, WH6BKQ, have been working on organizing a TX hunt.
Fred demonstrated the homebuilt Digital Playback device that will modulate
and time the rabbit transmissions at the October Meeting. Due to conflicting
dates and the approaching holidays the hunt will be in January '98. Take the
extra time to build a portable antenna or other device and join into the
hunt next year.
KARC's WEBPAGE IS UP! http://www.pilikia.net/karc
Walt, AH6OZ has uploaded the 2 pages Greg,WB6FZH, presented at the October
meeting for our starter page. A simple site is being developed and will be
in place in 1998. After Jan 1st, we will advertise it locally in the hope
that we might attract new members to KARC.
NEW NEWSLETTER FORMAT-Written for "On-Line" viewing at Web Site
The newsletter will be undergoing some changes in format, as the editor
learns more about HTML, the language that internet pages are written in,
the newsletter will take on a more interessting look. This way it will be
written one way and may be read at our Web Site or printed and mailed.
This way other Clubs, individual Hams and anyone interested in the club
activities can see what we are doing now, and planning to do later.

MINUTES- October 11th 1997- What you missed!
The September minutes were approved(from the newsletter text). WB6FZH told
of sending a note to EARC, and looking for addresses for other Oahu and
Hawaiian Clubs. The hope is to exchange newsletters with the other clubs
and coordinate activities in the future. Greg read the initial pages for
the KARC Web pages that contain basic KARC and Amateur Radio Information.
He asked for members to loan pictures for consideration for use in the Web
page project. KH6BI & WH6BKQ are working on a Transmitter hunt. A public
information booth at the Windward Mall is being explored by WH6LF,Howard.
Al, KH7BM, spoke about the Boy Scouts Jamboree-On-The-Air and his continued
efforts to get amateur radio into the classrooms. The future use of labels
from a Ham Callbook CD print-out for direct mail invitation to all area
hams was discussed. The door prizes were won by Howard,WH6LF, a Meter,
and Fred, KH6BI, a box of candy.(Both Prizes were donated by a club member)
KH6BI, Fred, demonstrated his homebrew digital voice TX hunt keyer. Our
Treasurer, Len, KH6NFN, reported balance of $678.68 as of 9/30/97. There was
an HW-8 QRP CW Transceiver on display with the manual for show and tell.
CALL LETTER BADGES-
Local and Off-Island sources continue to be checked. The Light-Green with
white letters name badge with rounded corners that Greg, WB6FZH/KH6 and
Howard,WH6LF, wear is about $6.00 plus 50 cents postage. A local source
in Kailua with one type of block letters, availiable only in blue with
white letters was quoted at $8.00 (It was not as nicely made as the $6.00
badge). Other sources are constantly being checked.
CONTACT WITH OTHER HAWAII RADIO CLUBS-
Greg, WB6FZH, has been trying to contact by mail and e-mail other Ham Radio
Clubs in Hawaii. A letter has been sent to EARC, with no reply. A couple of
other individuals were sent letters as reported officers of other Oahu clubs
with unknown addresses. No reply to these either. Email replies were
received from the Maui Club, and Kuai Club. They both have Web Pages and
will exchange reciprical Links to their club pages, and were glad to hear
from us. Further inquiries are being made. The the goal is to bring the
newsletters of other clubs or print-outs of on-line information to KARC
meetings for the members to read.

SPACE NEWS-"Sputnik" Strikes Again & MIR News
A model of the original Russian "SPUTNIK" Satellite was manually
launched from the MIR Space Station last Monday. It has a battery that will
eventually run down, but is beeping away on 145.82 for a while. It will be
gradually outrunning the MIR in orbit because it has less drag. Ham radio is
a low priority for now on MIR, but David Wolf has made a few voice contacts
from MIR since his arrival. The PMS packet computer and radio have been a
a little under the weather, but are expected to be working reliably again
soon. MIR ORBIT INFORMATION (Kaneohe Passes-Listen a couple of minutes
before and after listed time) [UTC=+10hrs] Handhelds with rubber ducks are
hearing it. Date/Time UTC: 11/08/97- 0034,1214,1349,1526,2159,2335.11/09/97-
1251,1427,2100,2237.11/10/97-0013,1151,1329,2138,2314. Mir is still
operating on 145.985 voice & 1200 packet. If you want to obtain a souvenir
QSL, contact Greg,WB6FZH/KH6 for information. If you hear packet signals, it
is most likely from DOVE Satellite on 146.825. Good Luck! FO-20 seems to be
in trouble, usual ID/Telemetry silent, and erratic dashes of carrier on
70cm beacon frequencies. RS-10 is still silent, AO-27 working fine!
