The Koolau Amateur Radio Club
Web Site (Version 1.0)

The club web site owes its existence to the work of three amateurs who contributed to its development at a time when development tools were limited. The first pages were created by Greg, WB6FZH and presented at the October 1997 meeting as the "starter pages". In November, Walt (AH6OZ) uploaded them to http://www.pilikia.net/karc, a site created and web space and bandwidth donated by Art Nelson, WH7N. The site grew from contributions by many over the next seven years; the documents and links multiplied. In late 2005 there were a total of 77 folders with 741 files -- over 28MB of data. But it had clearly become difficult to navigate the site, especially for newcomers.

In late 2005, Walt (AH6OZ), Mike (AH7R) and Joe (AH0A) decided to experiment with new web tools to see if we could redistribute the pages into related subject folders and add navigation tools to make browsing simpler. The model chosen was the ARRL web site. To the maximum extent possible no pages were to be left out, although in reviewing the HTML contributions, many duplicates were found. Not everything has been converted, so the current web site contents have been retained. We don't want to lose our history!

The main tool used was the JavaScript with CSS style sheets, which led to development difficulties caused by incompatibility between browsers. Use of some PHP lessened those problems at the expense of a little more complexity of the web site. The main page for the web site consists of 15 lines of PHP, 50 lines of JavaScript and 70 lines HTML.

So far the pages have been tested in Windows XP with Internet Explorer (Ver. 6), Netscape (Ver. 8.0.4), FireFox (Ver. 1.5), Opera (Ver. 8.5.1) and on a Power Book with Safari (Ver. 1.3.1). For older browsers like Netscape 4.X a text only version of the site navigation has been provided.

This is a work in process. With the exception of the navigation page, the goal has been to retain all information pages in HTML format so the site can be easily maintained. An attempt will be made to document Javascript and PHP code in the web site so that it can be "easily" understood by others who may take over maintenance in the future.

Aloha es 73 de Joe/AHØA.
